Cat Woman, Captain Sensible, Wreckless Eric & Rat Scabies

(December 24, 1976)

Punk music in London was becoming a force to be reckoned with at the end of 1976 with new bands appearing almost every day. This photo of The Damned’s Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies along with Stiff Records stablemate Wreckless Eric and the wonderful Soo Catwoman was taken at a Doctor Feelgood Christmas show. It felt like a changing of the guard as although the Feelgoods were an early influence on punk this younger generation was moving away from the pub-rock influences to create their own distinctive musical genre.

Although Wreckless Eric’s music was more whimsical it still had a fresh anarchic feel to it even if his career was not to last very long. In contrast The Damned are still performing to this day. Even though the line up has undergone various changes lead singer Dave Vanian and both Rat Scabies and Captain Sensible have performed on and off together ever since becoming the grandads of punk music!
