This is the first time I photographed Prince. His single ‘Kiss’ was hitting the charts and this was one of his many comebacks. He had announced his retirement from performing the year before. Being a brilliant performer/dancer Prince is difficult to photograph - he rarely stands still and his shows are often lit in a way unsympathetic to non-digital photography.

The last time I went to photograph Prince was at the now demolished Palladium in NYC. Photographers were allowed to shoot only during the first verse and chorus of the first song at the soundcheck. No flash was allowed. Prince was lit by a red light – a photographer’s nightmare as this oversaturates the film. I took one photo with flash and was immediately thrown out by security.
