Campfire Talk by Chris Salewicz and one night photo exhibit

I have 4 triptychs being exhibited on June 18th for one night at Ditto, New North Road, London, N1 which is accompanying a talk that music writer Chris Salewicz is giving. Details are here:

Campfire

Chris Salewicz, author, broadcaster and screenwriter

Thursday 18th June, 7pm

RSVP
Chris Salewicz has been chronicling popular culture for over thirty years as an author, broadcaster and screenwriter. From 1975 to 1981 – a ‘golden age of music journalism’ – he worked as senior features writer for NME, and forged a reputation as one of the UK’s leading music journalists. His latest book, The 27 Club, analyses the lives and deaths of seven musical maestros who all met their end at 27, including Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix. We can’t wait to welcome him down to The Lighthouse on Thursday 18th June, where he’ll be talking about these musical giants who all changed the world before their untimely deaths.

Chris will also be sharing the story of his long-standing relationship with Jamaica. During his time at NME he forged unique friendships with Bob Marley and Joe Strummer, and has gone on to write definitive biographies about both men that explore their own relationships with the island. His deep understanding of the region’s culture helped him write the screenplay for its most successful film ever, Third World Cop, while living in Jamaica in the mid-90s.

Chris’ talk will be supported by a ditto doors exhibition by David Corio, whose music photography has been published by NME, Rolling Stone and the New York Times, and displayed at venues such as the V&A in London, the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York, and Dublin’s Number One Gallery.

31 March 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the Poll Tax demonstrations. This started out as a peaceful march through the centre of London to highlight the poll tax that Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government imposed on the British public. Heavy-handed police tactics led to violence and ultimately brought Thatcher's political career to and end and forever tarnished her legacy.

Very sad news to hear that Cedric 'Im' Brooks the legendary Jamaican sax player has died. He can be heard on classic Studio One songs like Burning Spear's 'Door Peeper' and the Abyssinians 'Satta Massagana' and his group Mystic Revelation of Rastafari brought jazz and nyahbinghi drumming together in a way that had never been heard before. He lived in Ethiopia and played with Sun Ra and The Skatalites! I photographed Cedric in this image in 2004 at his sister's Queens NYC apartment where the pet dog howled in perfect harmony as Cedric played some of his best known tunes.
