Boy George

The Lyceum, London, UK
(November 2, 1982)

I took this photo of the androgynous Boy George when he and his band Culture Club were promoting their debut album ‘Kissing To Be Clever’. Their debut single ‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me’ had just reached number one in a dozen countries . The teenage crowd were screaming so loudly it was almost impossible to hear the music.

Although George was a well-known clubber in the New Romantics scene in London’s clubland at the start of the 1980s, Culture Club made him a star. George was a great singer and songwriter and with Culture Club sold 22 million records. After the band split up in 1986 Boy George’s drug problems resulted in his arrest several times. He found success again eventually - starring in the musical, ‘Taboo’ based on his life-story. He also dabbled in fashion with his label ‘B-Rude’. Since the 1990s he has often deejayed in trendy clubs, playing house music and remixing other artists’ club tunes.
