Elvis Costello

Birmingham Town Hall, Birmingham, UK
(October 25, 1977)

Here Elvis Costello is performing on the first Stiff Records tour which also included Ian Dury, Nick Lowe, Wreckless Eric and Larry Wallis. Elvis was promoting his debut single ‘Less Than Zero’ and hit album ‘My Aim Is True’ . He was very different from the other performers on tour. He was quite aloof and didn’t really communicate with the audience unlike the other acts who were far more engaging. Nonetheless Elvis would be the most successful, finding worldwide musical success - something which even eluded Ian Dury.

Elvis’ real name is Declan Patrick MacManus . Jake Riviera , one of the partners at Stiff Records suggested that the name Elvis to him. Elvis’s father who had been a singer with the Joe Loss Orchestra in the 1950s went by the stage name Day Costello. Elvis adopted that last name as a tribute to his father.
