Rory Gallagher
Electric Ballroom, Camden Town, London, UK
(1980)
As a teenager attempting to play guitar I fantasized that I was playing with Rory Gallagher. I loved his dirty blues sound, distinctive solos and bottleneck guitar that sounded so effortless. Having built up a loyal crowd from almost constant touring for many years his audience were totally devoted to him and he to them. I was lucky, I saw him play four times and every show was a revelation. He had energy and immense love for his music and he laughed and told stories between songs before bending more soulful notes from his guitar. His battered old Fender Stratocaster looked virtually worn out but it continued to produce great sounds.
