Tina Turner

The Venue, Victoria, London, UK
(December 16, 1983)

Tina Turner was beginning to find success as a solo artist after her bitter divorce from Ike Turner in the mid-seventies when this was taken. Her version of Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’ had just hit number 6 on the UK singles charts and at the end of this show she was presented with a silver disc for sales of 250,000 copies.

Tina Turner belted out a full catalogue of her songs for almost two hours. She has to be one of the best performers to photograph in concert if you can keep up with her. At 44 she was full of energy exuding immense sex-appeal. She was a great mover and I remember her outdancing the two backing dancers who were probably half her age. The show was a sell-out and it was so crowded at the front that my camera was pressed up against my face. I couldn’t have put it down even if I had wanted to.
